After my fiance asked me to marry him on September 7th, I started dieting like a madman. From that day to October 7th, I have shed 17 lbs. As a special present, my mom bought me my wedding gown. It's a beautiful Oleg Cassini (that's right, a favorite of Jackie O's!) There is a problem but yet an opportunity in this dress....it won't zip. That zipper has given me a "rebirth" if you will. For the first time in my life, I'm eating healthy. I do fresh cut fruit, yogurt, water, turkey rolls for dinner...you name it! But, I have found that it is expensive to live a healthy life....which in my mind, is criminal.
One of the slides on Nerenberg's powerpoint really excited me! A catering company, by the name Bon Appetit, is wanting to add 1,000 local farmers within a 150 mile radius of their business.
We need more farmers and more fresh produce. Another company, Organic Valley, recently went on a recruiting tour on the search for new "producers." In its campaign, it is said that being organic and eating right is both hip and sexy--and an excellent career choice.
If this dieting bride (me) were to step inside of an agency or what-have-you, and my boss were to ask what I would do to gain farmers, I would follow the steps of Organic Valley. To get a kid's attention, you have to stress how "cool" it is what you are pitching to him or her. It's always about what is in and what is hot. What these companies are trying to do now, is to make healthy living the in-thing. America (and many other countries) need to start making lifestyle changes, especially when we hear that our children will die before we do.
I wish that Nerenberg would have wrote an actual article on going organic and how to make it accessible. Yes, we need a lot of farmers but we need to know a lot more. Money is tight for everyone, but because you can't afford certain foods doesn't mean you have to die young. Let's create a movement!
